Local watch group working to avoid violence

In the wake of George Zimmerman's subordinate degree murder charges Wednesday, a neighborhood watch group in Lehigh Acres is doing what it can to steer clear of a similar situation by stressing proper protocol.

Zimmerman's charges have brought to light the matter of not only stand your ground but of neighborhood watch groups in general.

We spoke with members of one local group along Palatine Lane in Lehigh Acres who say they don't want one man's decision to give neighborhood watches a black eye. 

Neighborhood look at coordinator Roy Lipsett says if they're not watching you, they're watching out for you.

"We're looking for activity in homes we grasp are vacant," he said. "If I know my neighbors and they know me, we can look out for one another.

He and fellow members of a Lehigh Acres neighborhood guard group hitting the streets.

"We're not equipped, we're not trained, we're just doing what we recognize best," Lipsett said. "We keep an eye out through our window and report what is going on."
